Why Caring for the Soul Is Essential
 📖 Proverbs 4:23–27; Philippians 4:6–9; Luke 6:45; Matthew 11:28–29

We are often great at beginning each year with resolutions—to do better and to be better. We make plans to care for our bodies, our finances, our relationships, our image, and the like.

However, there is often an obvious omission: caring for the soul—the center and clearinghouse of our lives. We forget that everything we want to accomplish will always follow the condition of the soul.

By the soul, we mean our thoughts, emotions, will, and desires.

Your outlook on life is fundamentally a direct result of the condition of your soul. In other words, what happens on the outside—what is visible about you—is a reflection of what is happening on the inside (James 4:1–2).

Dr. Luke puts it this way: a good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart (Luke 6:45). Likewise, King Solomon teaches that the heart determines the course of one’s life (Proverbs 4:23).

Why Caring for the Soul Is Essential

It is imperative that we care for the soul because:

a- The Battle for the Soul

The devil wants nothing more than to gain a hold on our thoughts, emotions, will, and desires. He desires control over the soul just as much as God does. Depending on our choices, we ultimately determine who—God or the devil—has the foothold in our soul (1 Peter 2:11).

b- The Stability of Life Depends on the Soul

Life is like a ship. Everything that keeps it afloat is on the inside. No matter how boisterous the sea becomes, the ship will remain afloat as long as water does not get inside.

In the same way, if we keep our thoughts, emotions, will, and desires in check, we are positioned to have a good year—and by extension, a good life.

Scripture consistently agrees that external factors matter in only limited ways when the heart and soul are in a healthy place.

What Impedes the Buoyancy of the Soul

Proverbs 4:23–27 highlights four things that can compromise the health of the soul:

  1. The tongue — what you say and what you hear

  2. Lack of focus

  3. Your environment

  4. Fooling around with evil
